Sitting for long periods of time increases the risk of gaining weight. This may lead to obesity and other long-term diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even early death. We also know that watching fewer than 10 hours of TV per week and having fewer TV sets in the home and bedroom helps people lose weight. Reducing sitting time may also decrease eating while watching TV and increase time spent exercising.

Spend less time on the computer

New research looked at the amount of time people who were successful at losing weight spent sitting. They used data from the Weight Watchers Program and compared people who lost weight and kept the weight off with those who did not lose weight. The researchers found that those who kept the weight off spent 3 hours less per day sitting compared to those whose weight did not change. Those who kept weight off also spent 1 hour less per day sitting using a computer or playing video games.

Sitting too long harms health

People who want to lose weight should spend less time sitting during weekdays and weekends. Future interventions to promote successful weight loss should consider targeting a reduction in sitting, including less time in front of a computer and playing video games. This simple approach could have positive benefits for society.
