As many areas of the country shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, alcohol intake increased in the United States at the same time. In fact, the overall frequency of drinking alcohol among adults over age 30 increased by 14% in the spring 2020 compared to spring 2019. In addition, non-Hispanic white women reported a 41% increase in heavy drinking days (4 or more drinks in a couple of hours) in the spring 2020 compared to last year. We know that drinking alcohol can harm health. In addition to physical health problems, drinking too much alcohol can worsen mental health problems like anxiety and depression. This study emphasizes the importance of awareness of increased alcohol use during the pandemic and being aware of the risks of drinking on our mental and physical health.
