People with obesity often face negative attitudes and discrimination because of their weight. Stigma around weight can lead to serious physical and psychological problems and being judged negatively by doctors and nurses. People with type 2 diabetes often face overweight or obesity and negative stigma related to their weight. Researchers wondered if people with type 2 diabetes also face diabetes stigma. More than 1,200 American adults with type 2 diabetes completed an online survey about what other people think about their weight and diabetes. Over half had felt weight stigma, including in healthcare settings. Over half also experienced blame, judgement, and unfair treatment related to their diabetes. Women felt this stigma more often than men, and white women more than Black women. Negative attitudes and stereotypes related to diabetes and weight are common among adults with type 2 diabetes. Healthcare providers play an important role in providing stigma-free care and reducing such disparities.
