A new vaccine against COVID-19 developed by researchers in the United Kingdom appears to be safe and triggers an immune response to fight COVID-19 in the body. Research with 1,077 people showed the injection resulted in their bodies making antibodies and T-cells that can fight the virus. The vaccine, called ChAdOx1 nCoV-19, is made from a genetically engineered virus that causes the common cold in chimpanzees. The vaccine has been changed a lot, so it cannot cause infections in people, and the scientists made it “look” more like COVID-19. This means the vaccine resembles the actual COVID-19 virus and the immune system can learn how to attack it. However, there are side-effects. For example, 70% of people in the study got either a fever or headache. The researchers say this could be managed by taking acetaminophen. More than 10,000 people will participate in the next stage of the trials in the UK.
