Common obstacles to starting insulin among the Hispanic/Latino community include challenges related to access to health care, low education and economic status, but also cultural factors. For example, not having materials available in Spanish or not considering culturally-appropriate food preferences. There are also common misunderstandings and fears about insulin use. Patients report obstacles with health care providers, including difficulties with communication and language. Overall, there are many obstacles facing Hispanic/Latino patients in starting insulin. Awareness of these barriers is important for health care providers. This will enable them to identify and address insulin-related fears and misconceptions and to be mindful of their cultural understanding. Additionally, knowledge of current barriers will guide further research to develop better approaches to improve long-term health and quality of life in this population.
