Poor quality sleep is linked to health problems. Researchers recently found that among Hispanic/Latino adults, sleep apnea (the medical term for breathing problems during sleep leading to low oxygen levels in the blood) can cause thickening of the heart muscle. This can even lead to heart failure (which occurs when the heart stops working normally) in Hispanic/Latino men and women. Sleep problems, therefore, may contribute to the burden of heart failure in this community. More research is needed to explore this connection further.
