Gestational diabetes is an established risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes later in life. This has been known for over a decade. However, new research has shown that women with a history of gestational diabetes are almost 10 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than women who were pregnant but did not develop diabetes. This risk occurs across all races and ethnicities. The advice is that, after pregnancy, all women should focus on eating good quality food and increasing their level of physical activity.
