Drinking excess amounts of soda and other sugary drinks increases the risk of obesity and high blood pressure and is one of the main drivers of the type 2 diabetes epidemic in Mexico. There is a high level of consumption of these drinks in Mexico. As a result, the Mexican government implemented a tax of 1 peso per liter(approximately 10% increase in price) on all non-alcoholic drinks with added sugar starting on 1 January 2014. It now appears that this did cause consumption of these drinks to go down which will have important public health benefits for Mexican families.
