Rates of immunization against common childhood illnesses such as measles and whooping cough are declining due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents are canceling well-child checkups to avoid coronavirus exposure, increasing the risk of new health crises. According to immunization experts, the optimum rate of coverage for many vaccines, known as herd immunity, is about 90 to 95% of the population, so any reduction in immunization is a potential public health crisis separate from COVID-19.
