Stress, specifically from work, has a big impact on our health and our risk for type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is on the rise, especially among Latinos. It can affect quality of life and can even cause serious health problems. The biggest risk factors for type 2 diabetes are obesity and not exercising. However, stress from work is also a huge risk factor in getting type 2 diabetes. This is because when someone is under stress, the body goes into fight-or-flight mode and releases a hormone called cortisol. This hormone tells the body to increase blood sugar and to resist insulin. It is released during times of stress to give the body as much energy as possible for the stressful situation ahead. When these cortisol levels are high (such as when someone is experiencing a lot of stress from work), this can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes.
This study looked at 125,000 European adults and found a strong link between the group that experienced high levels of stress at work and type 2 diabetes. They defined stress at work, or as they called it “job strain,” as having high demands at work with little control. For example, if someone has to work really hard with little time and fast deadlines, then that would be considered “job strain.” The interesting thing is that stress at work was a big risk factor in type 2 diabetes even among those with healthy lifestyle habits like exercising, eating well, and not smoking. This means that there is a strong link between job strain and the development of type 2 diabetes despite lifestyle factors. In conclusion, it is important to know that the stress we are under has a direct impact on our health.
